What type of licence do I need?

There are different types of Refrigerant Handling Licences available, and the type you require will differ depending on what you are working with.

Licence NameEntitlement of Licence
RAC01 - Refrigerant handling licence – qualified persons (Full refrigeration and air conditioning licence: 2 & 3 years)

To work on air conditioning and refrigeration equipment and handle refrigerant for any work other than the Automotive industry.
AAC02 - Refrigerant handling licence – qualified persons (Automotive air conditioning licence: 2 & 3 years) For work on air conditioning and refrigeration equipment fitted to the cabin of a motor vehicle and handling refrigerant.
RSS03 - Refrigerant handling licence – qualified persons (Restricted heat pump – split systems – installation and decommissioning licence: 2 & 3 years) To handle any refrigerant and install and decommission any of the following:
  • a single-head split system air conditioner of less than 18kW
  • a 2-part hot water heat pump of less than 18kW
  • a 2-part swimming pool heat pump of less than 18kW
RDR04 - Refrigerant handling licence – qualified persons (Restricted domestic refrigeration and air conditioning appliances licence: 2 & 3 years) To work on air conditioning and refrigeration equipment and handle a refrigerant for either or both of the following: (a) any work on domestic refrigeration or air conditioning equipment and (b) any work on drinks fridges, refrigerated vending machines, ice cream chests, frozen carbonated beverage machines (slushies) and post mix machines. Note that these systems must not: (a) be permanently connected to the power supply of the premises where it is installed; nor (b) require the installation of pipe work to enable the movement of refrigerant.

Note: This definition does not cover split system air conditioners.

    • Any work on commercial stand-alone refrigeration equipment. Commercial stand-alone refrigeration equipment means refrigeration equipment that:
      1. 1. is designed primarily for commercial use; and
      2. 2. is designed not to be permanently connected to the power supply of the premises where it is installed; and
      3. 3. does not require the installation of pipework to enable the movement of refrigerant.

 

Trainee Licences

Licence NameEntitlement of Licence
TL000 - Trainee Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Licence To work on air conditioning and refrigeration equipment and handle refrigerant while undertaking training and/or assessment in a classroom setting and at your work place under supervision. The supervisor must be the holder of a licence that entitles them to engage in work for which the licensee is being trained. This licence is valid for the period of training, which can be up to one year.
CL000 - Refrigeration and air conditioning trainee licence (Classroom) To work on air conditioning and refrigeration equipment and handle a refrigerant in a classroom setting only. The licensee cannot handle refrigerant outside the classroom setting. This licence is valid for the period of training, which can be up to one year.

 

Restricted Licences

Licence NameEntitlement of Licence
ATL05 - Restricted refrigeration and air conditioning licence (Aviation: 1 & 3 years) For any work undertaken on air conditioning and refrigeration equipment on aircraft and to handle a refrigerant.
MTL06 - Restricted refrigeration and air conditioning licence (Marine: 1 & 3 years) To work on air conditioning and refrigeration equipment on vessels and handle refrigerant. Note: This does not apply to AMSA certified Watchkeeper, Marine Engineer 1 or Marine Engineer 2.
TRT07 - Restricted refrigeration and air conditioning licence (Transport: 1 & 3 years) To work on air conditioning and refrigeration equipment and handle refrigerant for any work on mobile refrigeration systems other than air conditioning systems in the cabin of a motor vehicle.
RHTL09 - Restricted refrigeration and air conditioning licence (Handler: 1 & 3 years) To handle a refrigerant while decanting cylinders.

 

Refrigerant Recovery Licences

Licence NameEntitlement of Licence
RRR10 - Restricted refrigeration and air conditioning licence (Recovery: 2 & 3 years) To recover and handle refrigerant while decommissioning stationary and automotive refrigeration and air conditioning (RAC) equipment.
RRR11 - Restricted refrigeration and air-conditioning licence (Auto Recovery: 2 & 3 years) To recover and handle refrigerant while decommissioning automotive air conditioning equipment.
RRR12 - Restricted refrigeration and air-conditioning licence (RAC Recovery: 2 & 3 years) To recover and handle refrigerant while decommissioning refrigeration and air conditioning (RAC) equipment other than mobile air conditioning equipment.

Required Qualifications (RAC)

Certificates must include statement of results

  • Successful completion of an Apprenticeship as a Refrigeration Mechanic e.g. Proficiency Certificate; or
  • Trade Recognition Certificate: Refrigeration Mechanic; or
  • Trade Certificate with a Trade Outcome of Refrigeration Mechanic and evidence of industry experience; or

  • UEE50320 or UEE50311 Diploma of Electrical and Refrigeration and Air conditioning; or
  • UEE51220 or UEE51211 Diploma of Air conditioning and Refrigeration Engineering; or
  • UEE62520 or UEE62511 Advanced Diploma of Air conditioning and Refrigeration Engineering; or

Required Qualifications (Auto)

Individuals with the below qualifications will be eligible for an Automotive air conditioning licence (AAC02 Refrigerant handling licence).

Please note:

  • For some qualifications, particular elective units are required to be completed in order to obtain a licence.
  • In other cases, particular elective units are required to obtain an unrestricted licence; restrictions will be imposed on the licence where these have not been completed.
  • These units may be completed in addition to or as a part of these qualifications.
  • A statement of results must be provided with (or as part of) each certificate provided as evidence.

AUR20220 Certificate II Automotive Air Conditioning Technology (and the two qualifications it supersedes, AUR20218 and AUR20216)

Units of competency required to obtain an unrestricted licence:

  • AURETU105 (previous AURETU005) Retrofit and modify air conditioning and HVAC systems
  • AURETU001 (previous AURETU2001) Install air conditioning systems; and/or
  • AURETU007 (previous AURETU4007) Overhaul air conditioning and HVAC system compressors.

Restrictions imposed on licence if above units of competency are not completed:

  • No retrofit or modify
  • No install, and
  • No overhaul of air conditioning systems.

AUR32721 Certificate III in Automotive Electric Vehicle Technology

Units of competency required to obtain a licence:

  • AURETU104 (previously AURETU004 or AURETU3004) Diagnose and repair air conditioning and HVAC systems

Units of competency required to obtain an unrestricted licence:

  • AURETU105 (previous AURETU005) Retrofit and modify air conditioning and HVAC systems
  • AURETU001 (previous AURETU2001) Install air conditioning systems; and/or
  • AURETU007 (previous AURETU4007) Overhaul air conditioning and HVAC system compressors.

Restrictions imposed on licence if above units of competency are not completed:

  • No retrofit or modify
  • No install, and
  • No overhaul of air conditioning systems.

Any of the ten qualifications listed below, if the below requirements are met (with adjoining conditions* listed below).

  • AUR31120 (previous AUR31116, AUR31114 or AUR31112) Certificate III in Heavy Commercial Vehicle Mechanical Technology
  • AUR31220 (previous AUR31216 or AUR31212) Certificate III in Mobile Plant Technology (supersedes AUR31720 (previous AUR31716 or AUR31712) Certificate III in Forklift Technology)

Required Conditions*

Units of competency required to obtain a licence:

  • AURETU103 (previously AURETU003 or AURETU2003) Service air conditioning and HVAC systems, and
  • AURETU104 (previously AURETU004 or AURETU3004) Diagnose and repair air conditioning and HVAC systems

Units of competency also required to obtain an unrestricted licence:

  • AURETU105 (previously AURETU005 or AURETU3005) Retrofit and modify air conditioning and HVAC systems
  • AURETU001 (previous AURETU2001) Install air conditioning systems; and/or
  • AURETU007 (previous AURETU4007) Overhaul air conditioning and HVAC system compressors.

Restrictions imposed on licence if above units of competency are not completed:

  • No retrofit or modify
  • No install, and
  • No overhaul of air conditioning systems.

AUR30405 Certificate III in Automotive Mechanical Technology

Units of competency required to obtain an unrestricted licence:

  • AURT222670A - Service air conditioning systems
  • AURT322666A - Repair/retrofit air conditioning systems

AUR20705 Certificate II in Automotive – Mechanical – Air Conditioning (superseded)

Units of competency required to obtain an unrestricted licence:

  • AURT322645A Overhaul air conditioning system components (or equivalent) or
  • AURT422645A Overhaul air conditioning system components (or equivalent)

Restrictions imposed on licence if required units of competency are not completed:

  • Work other than the overhaul of air conditioning system components.

AUR20799 Certificate II in Automotive – Mechanical – Air Conditioning (superseded)

Units of competency required to obtain an unrestricted licence:

  • AUR22631A Install air conditioning systems (or equivalent); and/or
  • AUR22645A Overhaul air conditioning system components (or equivalent)

Restrictions imposed on licence if required units of competency are not completed:

  • Work other than install air conditioning systems; and/or overhaul air conditioning system components.

Assessed to Certificate II standard by Automotive Training Solutions

No restrictions.

For work on vapour cycle air conditioning equipment used for A380 aircraft:

  • Aircraft Maintenance Engineer Trade Certificate; and
  • AMEA362A Maintain aircraft vapour cycle air conditioning systems; and
  • Evidence of having completed A380 Central Refrigeration Unit servicing training
