Restricted Refrigerant Recoverer Licence

If you want to recover refrigerant (fluorocarbon) from end-of-life decommissioned refrigeration and air conditioning equipment you must hold at least a Restricted Refrigerant Recoverer licence (RRRL) issued by the ARC.

You can get a RRRL for the following purposes:

  • Recovery from stationary systems only (e.g. home air conditioners, refrigerators)
  • Recovery from automotive air conditioning systems only
  • Recovery from both automotive and stationary systems

A business with employees licensed to recover, store and dispose of fluorocarbon refrigerant will require a Restricted Refrigerant Trading Authorisation - read more.

How to obtain a Restricted Refrigerant Recoverer Licence

  1. Make sure you are appropriately licensed to do the training
    • As training for the RRRL involves handling refrigerant, you will need a Trainee Restricted Refrigerant Recoverer Licence. Click here to apply
  2. Locate a 'licensed assessor' to help you with training and assessment:
    • For RRRL (stationary) applicants a licensed assessor is someone who has:
      • Full refrigeration and air conditioning (RAC) licence with the ARC; or
      • RRRL (stationary) holder
    • For RRRL (automotive) applicants a licensed assessor is someone who has:
      • Full automotive air conditioning licence with the ARC; or
      • RRRL (automotive) holder
    • For RRRL (auto & stationary) applicants a licensed assessor is someone who has:
      • Full refrigeration and air conditioning licence with an Auto endorsement; or
      • A Full RAC licence holder and a Full Auto licence holder; or
      • RRRL (stationary and auto) holder
    • If there is no licensed person in your workplace, you could approach another licensed operator, a recovery unit supplier or manufacturer, a local training provider or visit www.lookforthetick.com.au
  3. Complete training
    • Read the training manual or watch the video below
    • Practice recovering refrigerant under supervision of a licensed person
  4. Assessments
    • Knowledge Assessment (multiple choice)
    • Practical assessment:
      • For RRRL (stationary) applicants - stationary practical assessment
      • For RRRL (auto) applicants - auto practical assessment
      • For RRRL (auto & stationary) applicants - auto and stationary practical assessment
  5. Apply for RRRL
    • Apply online here. You will need to submit your successfully completed knowledge assessment and practical assessment, signed by the assessor.

* If you have the current AURSS00045 Vehicle Recovery Skills Set or the previous AURSS00022 Vehicle Recovery Skills Set, you are eligible for the RRRL (auto) licence without having to complete the training and assessment above.
